My narrow vision selectively searches for trees and their proximity to other organisms. A closer examination of looking at the marvels of the interconnectedness in the natural world reveals our interdependence, including human interactions.
Humans have had sacred relationships with trees for millennia. Scientist, author, enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Professor Robin Wall Kimmerer tells us indigenous cultures embrace the practice of reciprocity when engaging with the environment in Braiding Sweetgrass and The Serviceberry. One goal for this project is to capture a sublime quality in the images that prompts the viewer to see the trees as sacred to their well-being.
This continuing series of images began in 2024. Photographs were taken from many different geographic locations and include numerous species of trees growing in the southwest biomes of Florida, coniferous and deciduous forests of Minnesota, landscapes of the Netherlands, and the urban biomes of broad-leaved deciduous forests of the Czech Republic.
Within these small-scale images, inferred is the greater importance of mutually beneficial existences. The trees are critical for all our well-being and survival, and the photographs advocate for the conservation of these ecosystems.
These archival pigment prints are available for sale. The proceeds will cover production expenses and the remainder will go to non-profit environmental organizations.
